Below is information about the requirements for the most common visa photos and instructions for applying for visas.

USA

There are many different types of visas for the United States depending on the purpose of the trip, such as business travel/tourism and transit. The applicant must complete the DS-160 visa application form, where the correct visa type is selected. It must be completed and submitted before the interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. The form can only be filled out online. During the completion and submission process, the applicant must upload a photo file of themselves that is no more than six months old. A paper photo should be brought to the interview. At the interview, the applicant will undergo an inkless digital fingerprint scan.

USA Visa Application Instructions

1. Fill out the DS-160 form at https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/
2. Pay the visa fee.
3. Schedule an interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
4. Attend the interview.
5. If your visa is approved, it will be sent to the delivery location you selected when scheduling your interview.

USA Visa Photo Requirements

Paper photo:

• Photo size is 50 x 50mm.
• Head size must be 25-35mm (from top of head to chin).
• Eyes must be 28-35mm from the bottom of the photo.
• Background must be white or light-colored. No objects should be in the background.
• The face must be fully visible, and for example, a scarf should not cast shadows on the face.

Digital photo file:

• Minimum dimensions are 600 x 600px and maximum dimensions are 1200 x 1200px.
• Head size must be 50-70% of the total image height (from top of head to chin).
• Eyes must be at 55-70% height from the bottom of the image.
• Maximum file size 240KB.

India

For India, you can apply for tourist, business, work, conference, and student visas. The visa is applied for using an online form, which is filled out online, printed, and signed. A 5 x 5 cm color photo with a light, single-colored background is required as an attachment. The height of the face should be about half the total height of the photo.

India Visa Application Instructions:

• Visa type depends on the purpose of the trip
• You can apply for a visa up to 8 weeks before travel, and you should apply at least four weeks before travel
• Fill out the online form on the Indian Embassy website.
• Print and sign the form
• Attach a 5×5 cm color photo
• Applications with attachments will not be returned. Keep the original attachments for yourself and provide copies with the application.

India Visa Photo Requirements

• Paper photo size is 50 x 50mm.

General Document Requirements:

• Visa application form filled out online, printed and signed by the applicant;
• Passport valid for at least six months on the date of travel, with at least two blank spreads. The visa can be granted at most until the last date of validity of the passport.
• One color photo (size 5 x 5 cm) attached to the application form
• Non-Finnish and Estonian citizens: a copy of a valid residence permit or other proof showing how long the applicant has been residing in Finland/Estonia
• Minors: informal, written permission from both parents (in English).

Russia

There are many different types of visas for Russia, such as tourist and business visas.

Applying for a Russian Visa

Before you start filling out the application, make sure you have the following items available:

• Passport valid for at least six months after the trip, and with at least two blank pages
• Russian tour operator
• Number of previous visits to Russia and dates of the last visit
• Travel route
• Insurance company name (travel insurance valid in Russia)

When applying for work and student visas, an HIV certificate no more than three months old must be attached to the application. In addition, the name and contact information of the employer or educational institution must be provided.

A group tourist visa for 5-50 people can be applied for through an authorized travel agency. It is valid for up to one month. All applicants must meet the following conditions:

• Group members must travel in the same vehicle
• Arrive at the border at the same time when entering and leaving Russia
• Stay at the same place
• Move around Russia as a group

Russia Visa Photo Requirements

• The visa photo must be printed on photo paper
• Scanned images are not accepted; the photo must be taken directly with a camera
• The face must be fully visible in the photo and the expression must be neutral
• The background must be white or light-colored
• The photo size is 3.5 x 4.5cm and the photo is glued to the visa application.

Russia Visa Photo Prices

The Russian visa photo is the same size and price as the Finnish passport photo:

China

Applying for a Chinese Visa

When applying for a Chinese visa, you must book an appointment and complete the application at the Chinese Visa Application Center >>. The Chinese visa photo is made in size 3.3 x 4.8cm. The background must be white. See here for official instructions in English. Note, among other things, that jewelry, thick-rimmed glasses, and white shirts are prohibited in the photo.

China Visa Photo Requirements

Paper photo:

• Photo height 48mm and width 33mm
• Head size must be between 28mm-33mm in height and 15mm-22mm in width
• File size 40 KB to 120 KB
• The background must be white
• The subject’s eyes, eyebrows, and ears must be visible in the photo
• The face must be fully visible, and for example, a scarf should not cast shadows on the face.

Digital photo:

• Image size 354 px (width) x 472 px (height)
• The face should be centered at 191 px-251 px width
• There should be 10-70 px between the top edge of the image and the top of the head
• The height of the eyes should be at 256 px
• File size 40 KB to 120 KB

Other Considerations

The Chinese Embassy will register fingerprints from every Chinese visa applicant from September 25, 2018 onwards. Applicants who meet the following conditions are not obligated to register fingerprints:

• Applicants under 14 or over 70 years of age.
• Applicants who hold a diplomatic passport, or who are eligible to apply for diplomatic or ’courtesy’ visas.
• Applicants who are applying for a visa from the same Chinese Embassy or Chinese Visa Service Center where they have already registered their fingerprints within the past five years.
• Applicants whose fingers are not complete in number, or are otherwise physically impossible to register.
